What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is when the body is affected by nerve damage that results in symptoms of:

  • Pain
  • Weakness
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Poor balance
  • Restricted movement or function

There are several reasons why you may develop a neuropathy including traumatic injury, chronic conditions, vitamin deficiencies, cancer, and hormonal imbalances.

Types of Neuropathy

There are four main categories of neuropathy.

Autonomic Neuropathy

This neuropathy is quite serious and can disturb your overall quality of life as it affects the automatic processes within the body like digestion and blood pressure.

Peripheral Neuropathy

If you begin to experience neuropathy symptoms in your extremities such as your feet and hands, it may be referred to as peripheral neuropathy.

Mononeuropathy

This neuropathy is when only a single or focal nerve is affected such as sciatica.

Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is when you develop a neuropathy due to diabetes. This may affect nerves that control the extremities or automatic function.

In addition to this, the nerves themselves are divided into the:

  • Central Nervous System (CNS) which includes the brain and spinal cord.
  • Peripheral Nervous System which includes all the other nerves that feed the CNS and broadcast the signals from the CNS.

Lastly, nerves fall into the category of sensory, autonomic, or motor nerves, each with its own function that can be hijacked with nerve signal interruptions.
